A bit about Helen

A little bit about me; I am 46 years old, and my midlife crisis has consisted of getting tattoos, piercings and taking over Badass Mother Runners!  I have two kids; 12 year old boy and 10 year old girl, that keep me on my toes.

I have always loved being active, when I was younger I would try every sport that presented itself; at school and outside of school.  I found my true calling of Judo and Ju Jitsu when I was 9 and trained for many years.

Then, I kind of lost my way, a bit too much drinking and partying but with not enough balance, I can’t remember what the trigger was for getting active again, but I’m so glad it happened. I rediscovered my love for adventure and sport.

Ironically a for a person who just didn’t "get" running, I begrudgingly set about training to be able to do obstacles races, I couldn’t even run around my local park.  It didn’t take long for me to catch the bug; I finally had time to be myself!  So, now I’m constantly looking for the next thing to try and push my limits, after finally completing the Newport Marathon (a story all in itself), maybe something that doesn’t push me quite as much!

I have known Beth my whole life, we grew up on the same street, she is my bestie.  There will be no stories as she has a much better memory than me and I will never win an embarrassing story competition!  Although she once composed a song about her love of toast!  This has not really changed as I always struggle to fuel, during and post-race, especially in the longer distances, while Beth quite happily munches away.  She’s such a good friend though and would not leave my side when I spectacularly bonked in the Brighton Half Marathon.

Mine and Beth’s friendship has changed as we’ve grown.  Nothing has impacted it more than the pandemic where, certainly for me, she became my sanity.  Once a week, Sunday / Runday, we would call each other and run and talk.  I also would mark this as when I became a "runner"!  We now have become the type of friend which says, "I will do it if you do…" this has led to us doing an ultra and now having a go at doing justice to Badass Mother Runners…
